How to Get Your Business on Google Maps in Melbourne (Step-by-Step for Tradies)

Google Maps is the most powerful free marketing tool available to any Melbourne tradie or small business owner. When a homeowner in Richmond has a burst pipe at 9pm, they don't call their mate for a recommendation — they open Google Maps and call the first plumber they see. If your business isn't on Google Maps, that call goes to your competitor. This guide walks you through the exact process of getting listed, verified, and ranking.

Step 1: Create or Claim Your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account. Search for your business name. If it already exists (Google sometimes auto-creates listings), click 'Claim this business.' If it doesn't exist, click 'Add your business to Google.' Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signage and invoices — consistency matters for SEO.

Step 2: Choose the Right Business Category

Your primary category is one of the most important ranking factors in Google Maps. Be as specific as possible. If you're a plumber, choose 'Plumber' — not 'Contractor' or 'Home Services.' If you're an electrician, choose 'Electrician.' You can add secondary categories for additional services (e.g. a plumber might add 'Hot Water System Supplier' or 'Gas Fitting Contractor' as secondary categories). Getting this right from the start saves months of ranking time.

Step 3: Add Your Service Area (Not Just Your Address)

Most tradies work across multiple Melbourne suburbs, not just the one where they're based. Google Business Profile lets you set a service area — a list of suburbs or a radius from your location — so you appear in searches across your entire working area. Add every suburb you regularly service. If you cover all of inner Melbourne, add them individually rather than using a radius, as specific suburb targeting tends to produce better ranking results.

Important: If you work from home and don't want your home address publicly visible, you can hide your address and show only your service area. Google Maps will still rank you for local searches in your service area.

Step 4: Verify Your Business

Google requires you to verify that you are the legitimate owner of the business before your listing goes live. The most common verification method is a postcard sent to your business address containing a 5-digit code, which you then enter in your profile. This typically takes 5–14 days. Newer accounts may also be offered phone, email, or video verification — take whichever option is available to you, as it's faster. Your listing will not appear on Google Maps until verification is complete.

Step 5: Complete Every Section of Your Profile

  • Business hours: Include public holidays and after-hours availability if applicable
  • Phone number: Use your main business number — this is what customers will call directly from Maps
  • Website: Link to your website homepage or a dedicated landing page
  • Services: Add every service you offer with individual descriptions
  • Photos: Upload at least 10 photos — your vehicle, team, completed work, and logo
  • Business description: Write 250–750 characters naturally mentioning your trade, your service areas, and what makes you different

Step 6: Get Your First Five Reviews

A brand-new listing with zero reviews will struggle to rank even with a perfectly optimised profile. Your first priority after going live is to collect your first five Google reviews. Start with people who already know your work — past customers, neighbours you've helped, or colleagues in related trades who can vouch for your professionalism. Send them your Google review link directly via SMS or WhatsApp with a short, friendly message asking for their honest feedback.

How Long Until You Appear in Google Maps Searches?

After verification, your listing typically appears in Google Maps within 3–7 days. However, appearing in Maps and ranking prominently in the Map Pack for competitive search terms are two different things. A new listing with 5 reviews and a complete profile might rank on page 1 for low-competition searches (e.g. 'plumber [small suburb]') within 4–8 weeks. For high-competition terms (e.g. 'plumber Melbourne CBD'), expect 3–6 months of consistent optimisation work.

The good news is that even a new listing in a smaller suburb can generate real leads quickly. One of our clients — a plumber in Thornbury — received his first Google Maps enquiry within 11 days of his listing going live, before he had a single review.

"Your Google Maps listing is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it never calls in sick. It's the hardest-working member of your team — and it costs nothing."
